GREAT EVENTS
Carnival:
If Rio de Janeiro is known for one thing, it would have to be the Carnival. Rio's Carnival has a mysterious hold over most visitors and it is legendary the world over. Carnival season takes up the best part of the week and, as a holiday period, it is more important to the average carioca than Christmas or New Year's Day. Part of the mystery of Carnival is the fact that, as a celebration, it has no fixed dates from the outsider's perspective. But it does. The last official day always falls on Ash Wednesday and marks the start of the Lenten season. It is always held forty days prior to Easter. Moveable, yes, but you can schedule any date for carnival from now until the end of time.
Carnival is a mixture of street parades that feature the samba schools, dance balls to suit just about every taste and budget, and contagious revelry, which takes over the whole city and spreads throughout the country.
Seeing is believes when it comes to Carnival. The special attractions are parades of the top samba schools, which take place over the Sunday and Monday nights of Carnival season. Nearly 50,000 people parade over two nights, viewed each night by a crowd of around 75,000 spectators. Millions more people watch the festivities live on television. The parade is as competitive as any major soccer championship and each school has its fans to cheer them along the road to victory and glory. During Carnival season, Rio gets wild with street festivals, fancy dress balls and other events.
New Year's Eve Party:
Equally as unforgettable as Carnival is the celebration of the New Year in Rio. Several million people come together every year on December 31st on Copacabana beach. The vast majority of them are dressed in white to await the arrival of the New Year, which is marked with a massive fireworks display at midnight. Religious and mystic aspects also reign, as the feast day for the pagan goddess of the sea, Iemanjá, is celebrated on the turning of the New Year. Thousands of offerings, many candlelit, will be pushed out into the sea for the pleasure of Iemanjá.
With the New Year, come festivities and many shows to entertain the millions at Copacabana beach until the sun rises and the revelers break for breakfast. Rio is a city filled with parties and festivities, of which the New Year celebration is just one of many. But, for Brazilians, who come from all over the country to watch it, the New Year's party is second only to Carnival.
